New Showbiz Analysis

Waking Up Dead presents a progressive view of a queer protagonist navigating both professional and personal crises. By focusing on Danny Maldonado's identity and his relationship with a man, the film moves beyond assumptions that everyone is straight or cisgender. The film also challenges traditional masculinity by showing a male lead who is vulnerable and self-destructive. Placing a character with Hispanic heritage in a high-stakes role adds layers of ethnic identity and representation. However, the portrayal of addiction and terminal illness is not always clear about whether these elements have true character's ability to drive the story or are simply used as plot devices. Additionally, the handling of mental health and dependency issues remains somewhat superficial.
