New Showbiz Analysis

Luiz Villaça’s film is a character study that excels in its authentic racial representation, featuring a predominantly Black and mixed-race cast. This avoids the whitewashing of characters and mirrors the lived experiences of urban Brazil. However, the film remains heavily anchored in traditional masculine frameworks, focusing on male camaraderie and football culture. This limits the presence of women and LGBTQ+ perspectives, creating a narrow social landscape. While the film courageously tackles mental health and the vulnerability of aging men, it lacks broader representation of physical disabilities or neurodivergent characters. It offers a nuanced look at class and identity but prioritizes specific communal realities over broad social inclusivity.

In order to recreate a picture taken in 1974, during the inauguration of São Paulo subway, Pedro meets two school friends he had not seen for 40 years. If their existential crises, ageing and (astray) ways were not enough, Pedro announces, to everyone's surprise, he intends to take his own life — even though not before he sees his soccer team win a championship.
