The film opens with the cluttered chaos of Cairo’s middle-class apartments, immediately establishing a tone of domestic friction. Niazi Mostafa’s 1976 comedy uses this setting to dissect gender roles, positioning the husbands as bumbling agents of disorder and the wives as the weary, competent anchors of the household. The sold meaning is clear: male recklessness is a social problem that requires female supervision and patience. The camera lingers on the wives’ expressions of exhaustion, validating their frustration as a natural response to male incompetence. Adel Emam and Saeed Saleh provide the physical comedy, their failures serving as the primary source of humor. Meanwhile, Madiha Kamel and Safaa Abo El Saoud deliver the straight-man reactions, their competence highlighted against the men’s bumbling. The film argues that the traditional domestic sphere is a trap for men, who are ill-equipped to handle its demands. The ending restores order without punishing the husbands, rewarding the persistence of the nuclear unit. The wives’ labor is acknowledged as essential, but the men are ultimately forgiven for their chaos. This resolution reinforces the film’s central thesis: women are the stabilizing force in a world of male disorder. The final image is one of weary acceptance, where the wives have won the battle of competence, but the marriage remains the primary structure of their lives.
