The Zero Years is a dystopian drama that prioritizes the examination of power dynamics over traditional social representation. Its strength lies in its radical challenge to gender hierarchies and its critique of institutional control through the lens of bodily autonomy. However, the film lacks visible evidence of racial or ethnic diversity, focusing instead on a claustrophobic, systemic struggle. The representation of disability is tied more to systemic trauma and medicalized suffering than to inherent identity. Ultimately, the film succeeds as a progressive critique of state control, using a nightmare landscape to dismantle traditional social roles and highlight the tension between individual identity and forced conformity.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses on a community of women living outside traditional heterosexual structures. Though specific romantic relationships are not detailed, the rejection of state-mandated reproductive roles suggests a queer-themed environment.
The narrative challenges gender hierarchies by highlighting women resisting state control over their bodies. This defiance breaks down traditional views of feminine passivity and emphasizes women's ability to drive the story through collective action.
There is insufficient evidence to confirm a diverse or non-Anglo-Saxon majority cast. The focus remains on systemic oppression rather than ethnic breadth.
The film critically examines Western institutions, depicting the State as an oppressive force. A deteriorating environment symbolizes the failure of centralized authority, offering a critique of institutional power.
Characters face a reality defined by physical vulnerability and medicalized suffering. Themes of bodily trauma and forced sterilization challenge typical representations of healthy bodies.

Official Synopsis
Four women, sterilized and under constant toxic restraint and surveillance, serve their term in a government-run brothel. Their relations are at a critical point; food and water are scarce, their house is rotting and ready to collapse, nothing on the outside exists any more. Nightmarish visions, simulated miscarriages, injections and nausea comprise their daily routine. Yet their dream – although they have been sterilized by the State – is to have a child. One day, a customer disappears and the interrogation begins...
