Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. Social and romantic dynamics appear to align with traditional heteronormative structures without exploring non-cisnormative identities.

Gender Representation

Good

Roohi centers on a female protagonist reclaiming her agency. Her struggle against environmental constraints subverts passive domestic roles through her intellectual and creative pursuits.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Excellent

The film offers an authentic depiction of North Indian identity. By utilizing a localized setting and regional cast, it avoids Western-centric storytelling tropes.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The narrative explores the friction between individual passion and communal norms. It offers a moderate critique of small-town social structures and traditional constraints.

Disability Representation

Limited

There is no significant evidence of characters with visible or invisible disabilities. The plot focuses primarily on psychological and supernatural elements.

Strengths

  • Strong centering of a female protagonist reclaiming her voice and agency.
  • Authentic and cohesive depiction of North Indian regional identity.
  • Effective subversion of Western-centric horror storytelling tropes.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lack of intersectional complexity regarding LGBTQ+ identities.
  • Minimal representation of characters with visible or invisible disabilities.
  • Limited critique of religious or broader institutional structures.

AI Analysis

Roohi succeeds as a piece of regional storytelling that prioritizes female agency within a specific cultural framework. Its strength lies in its authentic ethnic centering and the subversion of traditional gender hierarchies through its protagonist's journey. However, the film lacks intersectional depth. The absence of LGBTQ+ narratives and disability representation limits its broader social scope, keeping the focus on a more conventional social landscape. Ultimately, while it avoids Western-centric horror tropes, the film remains somewhat tethered to traditional social structures rather than fully deconstructing them.
