After falling off the roof at a New Year's Eve house party, Owen decides that it's time to make some wholesale changes in his life. Over the next year, he quits drinking, re-enters his estranged son's life, reignites old friendships, and falls in love with Vera, a bank teller and fellow divorcee...all in an attempt to replace members of his family who he'd lost prematurely.

A Year and Change is a character-driven drama focused on individual redemption and the restoration of traditional social structures. The narrative follows Owen's journey through sobriety and familial reconciliation, prioritizing personal growth over systemic critique. The film relies on conventional storytelling tropes, such as the divorcee finding new love and the estranged father reconnecting with his son. This focus on traditional domestic and social bonds results in a lack of intersectional complexity. Ultimately, the work lacks visible markers of intentional social subversion. It presents a localized, personal trajectory that does not engage with broader themes of racial, gender, or queer diversity.
