Sheila McLaughlin’s work is a progressive achievement that centers queer subjectivity and female empowerment. By placing a lesbian relationship at the heart of the narrative, the film successfully challenges traditional romantic clichés and patriarchal structures. The film excels in its refusal to adhere to traditional, moralistic storytelling, opting instead for a fluid exploration of memory and reality. This intentionality makes it a significant piece of feminist and queer cinema. However, the film's impact is limited by a lack of racial and ethnic diversity. The focus remains on a localized, intimate psychological space that does not address broader multi-layered identities.
