Synopsis

Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

5.1/10

Fair

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film focuses on conventional romantic tropes, such as a couple on a date and a girl waiting for her boyfriend. There is no explicit evidence of non-cisnormative identities or the disruption of heteronormativity.

Gender Representation

Good

Ana, an engineering student, centers the narrative and disrupts traditional hierarchies. She demonstrates agency by assuming her father's technical projectionist duties, prioritizing intellectual competence over passive tropes.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

Set in Montevideo, the film reflects a South American demographic rather than a white-centric North American casting. It provides a non-Anglo-Saxon baseline through its regional setting and cast.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The setting of a declining movie theater serves as a backdrop for a narrative of systemic decay. The film explores social instability through its atmosphere but lacks explicit ideological framing.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There are no visible or invisible disabilities portrayed with agency or as central plot devices within the narrative.

Strengths

  • The female protagonist demonstrates significant agency and technical competence.
  • The setting provides an authentic South American demographic perspective.
  • The narrative subverts the 'damsel in distress' trope through Ana's character arc.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film relies on conventional romantic tropes without exploring non-cisnormative identities.
  • There is a lack of representation regarding disability or neurodivergence.
  • The plot does not actively deconstruct racial or systemic norms beyond its regional setting.

AI Analysis

The film succeeds in subverting gendered expectations by placing a technically skilled female protagonist in a traditionally male-dominated role. Ana's agency provides a strong counter-narrative to standard horror tropes. However, the film remains within conventional social frameworks. The romantic elements follow traditional heteronormative patterns, and the racial representation, while regionally authentic, does not actively deconstruct racial norms. Ultimately, the work offers a meaningful alternative to Hollywood-centric casting by rooting its identity in a Latin American perspective, even if it lacks explicit intersectional depth.
