Synopsis

A group of recent grads head out on a late night drive for grub, hoping to enjoy one final hangout before their paths diverge. Instead, they accidentally turn onto a never-ending, two-lane hellscape surrounded by untold horrors and cosmic forces beyond their understanding. Cramped together inside a Jeep Cherokee and with the miles stretching infinitely ahead, they face a choice: embrace their new existence or fight to escape it.

Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

7.3/10

Good

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

Representation is subtle and integrated into the character dynamics. While sexual orientations are not explicitly defined, the casting of actors like Akira Jackson suggests a focus on non-traditional identity expressions.

Gender Representation

Good

The film subverts traditional masculine tropes by prioritizing intellectual and psychological endurance. James is portrayed as analytical and reserved, shifting the focus away from physical dominance or patriarchal leadership.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

The ensemble features intentional intersectional representation through lead actors like Phinehas Yoon and Akira Jackson. This diverse casting disrupts the monolithic white protagonist groups common in road-trip horror.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Excellent

The narrative explores moral relativism within a chaotic, indifferent hellscape. It prioritizes individual existential truth over religious or patriotic certainties, critiquing the stability of traditional societal institutions.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no explicit portrayal of visible or invisible disabilities. Fisher’s arm injury serves as a plot catalyst rather than a nuanced exploration of disability or neurodivergence.

Strengths

  • Intentional and intersectional casting of the lead ensemble.
  • Subversion of traditional gender roles and masculine leadership tropes.
  • Philosophical depth that challenges established social and moral hierarchies.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lack of nuanced representation regarding disability or neurodivergence.
  • Subtle LGBTQ+ themes may lack explicit clarity for some viewers.

AI Analysis

It Ends utilizes cosmic horror to deconstruct social hierarchies and individual agency. The film succeeds by moving away from traditional survival tropes, instead focusing on the psychological breakdown of a diverse group of graduates. The casting is a significant strength, providing an intersectional ensemble that avoids the homogeneity often found in the genre. This diversity allows the existential themes to feel universal rather than tied to a specific demographic. However, the film lacks depth regarding disability representation. While physical injury occurs, it functions primarily as a narrative device rather than a meaningful exploration of lived experience.
