Debajo is a naturalist character study that prioritizes psychological depth over overt ideological messaging. It succeeds by grounding its narrative in the specific textures of Chilean rural life and the internal evolution of its characters. The film's strength lies in its commitment to a non-Western, female-centric perspective. By focusing on the nuances of female maturation and domestic agency, it avoids many mainstream, homogenized storytelling tropes. However, the film lacks representation in several key areas. It does not feature LGBTQ+ identities or characters with disabilities, remaining focused on conventional familial and developmental structures.
