Marcel Carné’s drama is a period-specific exploration of personal and social dramas. It highlights female leadership in professional settings and the moral complexity of Parisian nightlife. However, the film remains confined to its time, presenting a uniform social setting. The representation lacks depth in terms of diverse identities and social structures. Ultimately, while the film questions the surface of respectability, it does not address broader societal issues or diverse representation.
