Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.2/10

Limited

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film focuses on heteronormative romantic connections and traditional family structures. There is no evidence of non-cisnormative gender identities or same-sex intimacy within the central character arcs.

Gender Representation

Fair

Pearl provides emotional agency as the protagonist, disrupting some traditional hierarchies. However, the story remains anchored in domestic spheres and does not actively seek to subvert gender roles.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The cast is predominantly white, reflecting a specific demographic snapshot of London. While the protagonist's Jewish identity adds ethnic specificity, the film lacks a multi-ethnic ensemble.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The narrative explores subjective experiences of grief and the breakdown of the 'perfect' nuclear family. It functions as a character study rather than an explicit systemic critique.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no significant presence of characters with visible or invisible disabilities. The film does not engage with neurodivergent perspectives or use disability as a central theme.

Strengths

  • Provides nuanced emotional agency through the female protagonist, Pearl.
  • Offers ethnic specificity through the depiction of Jewish heritage.
  • Subtly deconstructs the concept of the perfect nuclear family.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-cisnormative gender expressions.
  • Fails to include characters with visible or invisible disabilities.
  • Does not present a multi-ethnic ensemble to challenge the Anglo-centric setting.

AI Analysis

Used People is a character-driven drama that prioritizes individual emotional truths over the representation of marginalized identities. It explores the complexities of grief and domestic instability through a specific cultural lens. The film offers a nuanced look at female agency and Jewish heritage, avoiding the most regressive tropes. However, it operates within a conventional social framework that lacks intentionality regarding intersectional visibility. Ultimately, the narrative focuses on interpersonal relationships rather than deconstructing cultural or political power dynamics, resulting in a story that feels culturally specific but not broadly diverse.
