AI Analysis
Live and Become is a sophisticated exploration of identity that prioritizes the agency of a marginalized ethnic group. It succeeds by deconstructing the concept of 'purity' in lineage, replacing rigid dogma with situational ethics and human connection. The film's strength lies in its nuanced treatment of racial and cultural identity. By centering the Ethiopian Jewish experience, it provides a high-stakes lens through which to view systemic oppression and the resilience of the human spirit. However, the film lacks breadth in other areas of representation. It does not engage with LGBTQ+ narratives or disability, and the gender dynamics largely adhere to the conventional hierarchies of the historical era depicted.
