Synopsis

Award-winning director Patrick Forbes goes beyond the headlines to film the bitter battle to govern Britain after 2016’s referendum vote. Filmed over one extraordinary year, it’s a story of low politics, high ambition and bitter personal animosities – at stake the biggest decision the UK has taken for decades. Can the prime minister tame the judges, the opposition and finally the public to deliver Brexit? One thing everyone involved agrees on, get this wrong and, ‘we will see another even bigger seismic change in this country’s politics’.

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The film centers on constitutional crises and parliamentary friction. Representation of LGBTQ+ figures appears incidental to the political subject matter rather than a central theme.

Gender Representation

Fair

The narrative focuses on traditional hierarchies within the Prime Minister's office and parliamentary leadership. It does not appear to subvert gendered leadership roles or masculine authority.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The documentary reflects the demographic constraints of the existing UK political class. There is no evidence of intentional efforts to explore racial diversity through the cast.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The study focuses on nationalism and the restructuring of a Western state. It prioritizes the internal friction of national identity over the deconstruction of Western institutions.

Disability Representation

Minimal

The film lacks a discernible focus on neurodivergence, physical disability, or mental health as central narrative elements.

Strengths

  • Provides high-stakes, real-time access to the mechanics of UK government and parliamentary friction.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks intentionality in driving progressive identity-based narratives or subverting traditional power structures.
  • Reflects the demographic homogeneity of the existing political class during the Brexit era.

AI Analysis

This documentary functions as a traditional observational study of institutional conflict. It prioritizes the mechanics of governance and the ambitions of established political figures over identity-based storytelling. Because the film operates within existing systemic frameworks of political reporting, it lacks the intentionality needed to drive progressive narratives. The focus remains on the high-stakes battle to govern Britain following the referendum. Ultimately, the work captures a specific era of political leadership, which inherently limits the breadth of diverse representation shown on screen.
