Wes Craven’s thriller prioritizes claustrophobic tension and suspense over social or demographic representation. While the film succeeds in giving its female lead a strong, active arc, it remains a very homogeneous production. The narrative is centered on a binary power struggle that lacks multi-layered depth. It functions as a standard genre exercise rather than a vehicle for progressive social commentary or systemic critique.
Category Breakdown
The film follows a strictly straight-centered structure. It lacks any visible LGBTQ+ characters or non-assuming gender matches what was assigned at birth identities.
Lisa Reisert evolves from a vulnerable passenger into a capable agent of her own survival. This arc avoids the typical damsel in distress cliché through her use of intellect and active role.
The cast is predominantly white and Anglo-Saxon. The narrative lacks diverse casting or any engagement with racial identity.
The story adheres to traditional Western thriller conventions. It focuses on a localized criminal threat rather than critiquing Western institutions or social frameworks.
There is no depiction of visible or invisible disabilities. Characters are presented through a lens of physical and psychological normativity.
