Synopsis

Eighteen year-old Corey Peterson and his mother move to a small town due to a trauma in their past. On Corey's first day at Hallows End High School, he's approached by Mason, also new in town, who tells him about the death of his friend at the school and advises Corey to stay away from the wrestler Perry and his gang. When two other students vanish, Corey decides to talk to Principal Rizcheck, who pays no attention to him. Corey and Mason investigate the secret about the school and expose the dark truth about Hallows End and the missing students.

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. It follows a conventional horror structure centered on a male protagonist without addressing non-cisnormative identities.

Gender Representation

Fair

The story focuses on a male protagonist and his male peers. While women appear as a mother and a principal, their roles seem reactive to the male-driven investigation.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The small-town setting and cast appear to follow homogeneous casting norms. There is no evidence of high-agency characters of color or intersectional depth.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The plot adheres to traditional Western horror tropes. It lacks themes that challenge established institutions or provide a critique of systemic oppression.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no indication of characters with physical or neurodivergent disabilities. Disability is not utilized as a narrative device or central character element.

Strengths

  • The film maintains a clear, focused narrative structure centered on a localized mystery.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film lacks diverse character identities and intersectional depth.
  • Female characters occupy reactive roles rather than driving the central investigation.
  • There is a notable absence of racial diversity and disability representation.

AI Analysis

The Frightening operates within a standard horror framework that prioritizes genre tropes over diverse or subversive storytelling. The narrative is driven by a male-centric mystery, leaving little room for intersectional depth or varied perspectives. Character roles for women and people of color appear minimal or functional rather than central. The film relies on established archetypes that do not challenge traditional social hierarchies or cultural norms. Ultimately, the film lacks the complexity required for meaningful representation, focusing instead on a localized mystery and conventional hero-journey structures.
