Skinwalker: Curse of the Shaman functions as a typical mid-2000s direct-to-video horror film. It leverages Indigenous mythology as a key plot driver, but the narrative structure remains grounded in a Western viewpoint that can make non-Western traditions seem menacing. The film offers some women's ability to drive the story through its lead character, Brooke, but it lacks broader representation of diverse identities. There are no visible LGBTQ+ characters or individuals with disabilities. Overall, the film leans on conventional genre formulas. It employs cultural folklore for atmosphere without significantly empowering characters of color or challenging traditional power structures.
