The First Man is a sophisticated historical drama that explores the power dynamics of colonial history. It successfully challenges Western dominance by highlighting the political and ethnic conflicts of the Algerian independence movement. However, the film adheres to traditional character types. It relies on conventional gender roles and lacks representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-straight characters. Overall, the film is intellectually progressive in its cultural critique but maintains a traditional approach to interpersonal relationships and character diversity.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses on the protagonist's inner thoughts and family history, but it doesn't include any LGBTQ+ characters or explore non-straight identities.
The story mainly revolves around the male experience of trauma and intellectual pursuits. Maternal figures are important in the protagonist's memories, but they are shown primarily in domestic settings rather than as leaders or disruptors of society.
The film highlights the tension between French and Algerian identities. By featuring a young Arab boy and the fight for independence, it offers a counter-narrative to a purely European perspective.
The story examines anti-colonial themes by focusing on the Algerian struggle against French dominance. It questions traditional imperialist power structures and the fluidity of national identity during a time of change.
There is no significant exploration of visible or invisible disabilities in the narrative. Psychological trauma is presented as a universal human experience rather than a specific disability issue.

Official Synopsis
Based on a novel that Albert Camus was working on when he died, we follow Jacques Comery as he travels back to Algeria in 1957, a place full of childhood memories. The country is split between those wanting to remain a part of France, and those demanding independence. Reminiscences of his mother, his stern grandmother and a young Arab boy come flooding back.
