See How They Run focuses on the style and mechanics of a mid-century whodunit. Its progressive elements are mostly found in the gender dynamics, where the female lead is given professional parity and a significant role in the police procedural. However, the film stays true to the social norms of the 1950s, maintaining a traditional approach to race, culture, and sexual orientation. It does not delve into characters who reflect more than one aspect of diversity or systemic critiques.
Category Breakdown
The film follows the conventions of 1950s London, which assumes everyone is straight. There are no explicit LGBTQ+ characters or stories that question traditional gender roles and orientations.
The story challenges the passive stereotypes of the 1950s by positioning Sergeant Stalker as a capable professional. Her significant role in driving the plot defies the era's expectations of women.
The cast is mainly white and Anglo-Saxon, reflecting the demographics of the 1950s West End. The film presents a traditional view of the era's racial makeup.
The story emphasizes theatricality and mystery over critical examination. It highlights the aesthetic and cultural traditions of mid-century British society and formal Western institutions.
