Henrik Malyan’s film is a culturally specific drama that excels in regional ethnic representation. By centering Armenian identity, it offers a meaningful departure from Moscow-centric or Western-centric cinematic norms. However, the film adheres to the traditional social hierarchies of its era. The focus remains heavily on male-driven conflict and communal survival, leaving little room for gender diversity or queer narratives. Ultimately, the work's strength lies in its critique of institutional authority. It pits local, organic morality against the rigid structures of the state, providing a sophisticated look at communal ethics.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include any LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. Given its 1969 Soviet production context, the story focuses on traditional communal structures rather than non-straight relationships.
The story centers around male shepherds, placing the primary conflict and ability to act within a male-dominated social structure. There is little evidence of women in positions of authority or challenging gender hierarchies.
The film highlights an Armenian mountain community, disrupting Western-centric storytelling by presenting a non-Slavic, non-Western cultural landscape as the central focus.
The story critiques centralized state legalism by comparing local morality against formal police inquiries. It emphasizes communal survival and organic ethics over rigid, institutionalized laws and property rights.
There is no evidence of visible or invisible disabilities being used as central character arcs. The film focuses on the general physical hardships of mountain life instead.

Official Synopsis
The tranquility of a remote Armenian mountain community is disrupted when a group of shepherds affected by the pangs of an evening hunger, decide to butcher and barbecue the sheep of another's that have strayed into their herd. An official inquiry by the city police complicates matters, and questions of law, morality and community only seem to lead to further entanglements.
