Anastasia Trofimova’s documentary provides a critical look at the Russian military, emphasizing individual existential struggles over state propaganda. By embedding herself within a battalion, she captures a raw, unfiltered reality. The film's main strength lies in its cultural subversion. It challenges the 'patriotic soldier' stereotype, presenting an army in disarray. This approach offers a sophisticated critique of both Eastern and Western geopolitical narratives. However, the film lacks depth in representing diverse identities. It focuses primarily on a specific national and ethnic group, with no clear representation of LGBTQ+ identities or physical/neurodivergent disabilities.
Category Breakdown
The film doesn't include any explicit references to LGBTQ+ characters or stories about non-straight identities. The focus is on the battalion's disillusionment, which means there's no direct engagement with queer representation.
Despite being set in a traditionally masculine military environment, the director's female perspective adds a fresh angle to war cinema. The film humanizes soldiers, moving away from hyper-masculinity towards vulnerability and disillusionment.
The documentary centers on Russian soldiers, aiming to avoid simplistic nationalistic stereotypes. It portrays individuals rather than types, offering a nuanced view of the men involved.
The film excels by challenging established geopolitical narratives. It questions state-sanctioned morality and patriotism, showing conflict as chaotic rather than following a binary moral code.
There is no specific information regarding the portrayal of physical or neurodivergent disabilities within the film.

Official Synopsis
Anastasia Trofimova, a Russian-Canadian filmmaker, gains unprecedented access to follow a Russian Army battalion in Ukraine. Without any official clearance or permits, she earns the trust of foot soldiers and embeds herself over the span of a year with one battalion as it makes its way across Eastern Ukraine. What she discovers is far from the propaganda and labels pushed by the East or West: an army in disarray, soldiers disillusioned and often struggling to understand what they are fighting for.
