Mistress Frankenstein uses shifts in identity to challenge traditional gender and domestic roles. The film's main mechanism involves using a non-straight identity to disrupt conventional structures, effectively breaking down the stereotype of the submissive female character. However, the film leans heavily on problematic stereotypes. For example, the lesbian identity is linked to predatory behavior, and the character of Igor is used primarily for comedic relief rather than exploring disability.

Dr. Victor Frankenstein neglects the sexual needs of his frigid and frustrated wife Helena. After Helena gets killed in a horse riding accident, Victor decides to bring her back to life.
