Paul is agonising over his interpretation of 'Uncle Vanya' and, paralysed by anxiety, stumbles upon a solution via a New Yorker article about a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by extracting souls. He enlists their services—only to discover that his soul is the shape and size of a chickpea.

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The film explores identity through the lens of soul extraction and personal anxiety. While specific queer arcs are not confirmed, the genre suggests a landscape for non-normative identity exploration.

Gender Representation

Fair

Paul's psychological fragility and paralysis disrupt traditional masculine archetypes of stoicism. However, the narrative lacks information regarding the agency or presence of female characters.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Minimal

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The story critiques traditional spirituality by reimagining the soul as a technological commodity. It favors a secular, intellectualized framework over established institutional morality.

Strengths

  • Provides a nuanced portrayal of mental health by making anxiety a central narrative driver.
  • Critiques religious certainties through a secular, scientific reimagining of the soul.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks information regarding the racial and ethnic diversity of the cast and setting.
  • Provides no clarity on the agency or representation of female characters.
  • Does not explicitly confirm the presence of LGBTQ+ characters or arcs.

AI Analysis

Cold Souls uses science fiction as a metaphor to examine neurodivergence and the commodification of the human psyche. The film moves away from conventional hero narratives to focus on a fragmented, subjective experience of reality. The protagonist's vulnerability challenges standard masculine expectations, while the technological approach to the soul offers a critique of metaphysical certainties. This creates a narrative centered on individual complexity rather than social hierarchies. However, the film's diversity profile is limited by a lack of data regarding racial representation and female character roles, preventing a more comprehensive assessment of its inclusivity.
