Walking Dead In The West stands out from typical Westerns by integrating a multi-ethnic cast into its central survivalist conflict. Featuring a Buffalo Soldier and an Apache Chief as key figures, the film challenges the Anglo-Saxon dominance usually found in period pieces. However, the film adheres to traditional genre conventions regarding gender. The leadership structure is heavily male-dominated, focusing on masculine archetypes like the Marshal and the outlaw without providing much detail about female roles. While the horror setting allows for a breakdown of societal institutions, the narrative does not delve deeply into systemic critiques or queer issues. It is a progressive step for the genre's racial representation, even if its social dynamics remain traditional.
