Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

6.0/10

Good

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The story centers on a romantic connection between Jewel and Nico. While the pairing follows a heteronormative structure, the film explores themes of 'otherness' through its monster trope.

Gender Representation

Fair

Jewel avoids the typical damsel in distress trope, acting as an autonomous figure with her own agency. The plot shifts power dynamics by making her the driver of the emotional stakes.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

By centering the Manananggal, the film elevates Philippine mythology over Western supernatural tropes. This use of indigenous folklore provides a strong boost to Southeast Asian ethnic representation.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The narrative deconstructs the monster archetype, framing the supernatural through loneliness rather than pure evil. This approach prioritizes emotional complexity over simple binary morality.

Disability Representation

Minimal

The film does not provide explicit evidence regarding physical or neurodivergent disabilities. The focus remains on the characters' emotional states of loneliness and heartbreak.

Strengths

  • Strong use of Philippine folklore to challenge Western horror hegemony.
  • Subversion of traditional gender roles through an autonomous female lead.
  • Nuanced portrayal of the 'monster' as a complex, lonely individual.

Areas for Improvement

  • Reliance on a conventional heteronormative romantic structure.
  • Lack of explicit representation for LGBTQ+ identities.
  • Absence of visible disability or neurodivergent representation.

AI Analysis

Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B succeeds by reclaiming local mythology, using the Manananggal to challenge Western-centric horror norms. This cultural grounding provides a distinct identity that elevates the genre. While the central romance follows traditional patterns, the film subverts gender expectations. Jewel is a character of mystery and autonomy rather than a passive object, shifting the emotional weight of the story. However, the narrative remains limited by its heteronormative focus and lack of explicit representation for non-cisnormative identities or disabilities. It functions primarily as a culturally specific romantic drama.
