Time of Moulting provides a bleak deconstruction of the 1970s West German nuclear family. It successfully challenges traditional gender roles by presenting unstable characters instead of stable archetypes. However, the film remains constrained by its period-specific demographic uniformity and a lack of explicit LGBTQ+ representation. The narrative focuses narrowly on the psychological unraveling of a single household. Ultimately, the film's strength lies in its critique of the traditional Western family unit, using the protagonist's descent into sinister autonomy to challenge the notion of the home as a sanctuary.
Category Breakdown
The film does not explicitly depict LGBTQ+ identities or relationships that go beyond the assumption that everyone is straight. It focuses on troubled family dynamics without exploring any potential for non-traditional identities.
The story challenges traditional gender roles by centering on a female protagonist dealing with inadequate parents. It breaks down the nurturing maternal stereotype and the competent patriarchal figure by showing unstable characters.
Set in 1970s West Germany, the film reflects the era's homogeneous population. It does not use diverse casting to break up its specific historical and localized context.
The film portrays the family unit as a source of trauma by deconstructing Western institutions. It emphasizes psychological fragmentation and a dark, subjective morality over traditional moral teachings.
The mother is shown with significant mental and physical conditions. The film avoids overly inspirational portrayals by focusing on the harsh realities of chronic instability and domestic dysfunction.

Official Synopsis
In a small town in 1970s West Germany, Stephanie is raised by two parents who have no business having children. The mother suffers from an unspecified medical condition—one both mental and physical. The father makes it clear that he has no patience for his daughter. Young Stephanie takes solace in exploring the mysteries hidden away in the increasingly untidy house, particularly the trunk full of her grandfather’s butcher’s equipment; older Stephanie takes far more sinister comfort in the tools found therein.
