Monika Treut’s documentary is a deep exploration of identity politics that effectively deconstructs rigid gender norms. By focusing on individuals who exist outside established social categories, the film moves beyond simple visibility to explore the complexities of gender expression. The narrative structure allows subjects to play a significant role in driving the story, enabling them to challenge the rigidity of Western social institutions. It serves as a key document for understanding non-traditional gender identities through a lens of fluidity. While the film excels in representing gender and queer identities, it does not delve deeply into the intersection of race and identity.

Official Synopsis
Monika Treut explores the worlds and thoughts of several female to male transgendered individuals. As with Treuts first film, Jungfrauenmaschine, Gendernauts, enters a minority sector of San Fransisco culture. The characters in this film have a lot to complain about, and they do. They are people whose physical appearance (female) does not match their inner sexual identity (male). The subject is pinpointed in the film independant of sexual orientation. Leave your conservative hats at the door, this is going to need your special attention.
