Queer identity is the default setting, not a subplot. Nick and Charlie’s gay romance anchors the film, while Elle’s trans identity and Tao’s bisexuality are woven naturally into daily life. Their relationships drive the narrative without being framed as issues to be solved.

Women and non-binary characters carry equal narrative weight. Charlie, Elle, and Tara make pivotal life choices that shape the story, while male characters like Nick grapple openly with anxiety and insecurity. Emotional vulnerability is shared across genders.

The cast is racially mixed, with Asian and Black characters in leading roles. Charlie’s mixed-race background and the diverse student body are presented as ordinary, unremarkable facts of life. Representation feels lived-in rather than performative.

Traditional institutions are shown as flawed; one teacher blocks a Pride club while another quietly supports it. The film champions secular, progressive values and frames family expectations as sources of stress. Community and chosen family matter more than conformity.

Mental health is a major theme. Charlie’s eating disorder and Nick’s anxiety are depicted realistically as serious struggles requiring support from friends and community. However, no visible physical disabilities are represented among the main cast.
