Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.7/10

Limited

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film adheres to a traditional heteronormative structure. The plot centers on a romantic relationship between a man and a woman and their shared biological connection to their son.

Gender Representation

Good

Adriana is portrayed as a successful, intellectually driven novelist with significant agency. The narrative avoids submissive tropes by focusing on her professional autonomy and complex maternal responsibilities.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The story focuses on the internal emotional lives of Italian protagonists. While set during the Siege of Sarajevo, the Bosnian conflict serves as a catalyst rather than a tool for ethnic exploration.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The film explores subjective truth and situational ethics rather than rigid moral codes. It deconstructs the idealized stable family unit, portraying its breakdown as a humanizing tragedy.

Disability Representation

Limited

There are no prominent depictions of visible or invisible disabilities. The narrative prioritizes psychological and emotional trauma resulting from war and interpersonal deception.

Strengths

  • Strong portrayal of female intellectual agency and professional autonomy.
  • Nuanced exploration of subjective morality and human complexity.
  • Effective deconstruction of traditional domestic and family structures.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lack of engagement with non-cisnormative or LGBTQ+ identities.
  • Limited exploration of the diverse ethnic identities within the Bosnian setting.
  • Minimal representation of disability or diverse lived experiences.

AI Analysis

Sergio Castellitto’s drama succeeds in presenting a complex female lead who possesses intellectual and professional autonomy. By focusing on Adriana’s career and difficult choices, the film moves beyond simple maternal archetypes. However, the film remains narrow in its scope. The focus on a specific European socioeconomic class and the reliance on a heteronormative romantic core limits its engagement with broader intersectional identities. While the Bosnian setting provides a heavy backdrop, the narrative stays tethered to the Italian characters' perspectives. This prevents the film from fully exploring the diverse ethnic and racial complexities inherent to its setting.
