Railroad Man is a contemplative character study that emphasizes historical authenticity and localized cultural norms. The narrative focuses on the intersection of personal memory and industrial decline in Hokkaido, rather than challenging social hierarchies. Since the film adheres to traditional structures, it lacks representation for LGBTQ+ identities and disability. The story remains centered on a singular, homogeneous experience of grief and vocation. While the film offers a specific and authentic portrayal of Japanese working-class life, it does not incorporate diverse or multi-layered perspectives.
