Apolonia, Apolonia is a character-driven portrait that moves away from standard biographical narratives. It succeeds by centering a female-led narrative that values unconventional communal environments and artistic devotion over traditional social hierarchies. The film's strength lies in its focus on a non-conformist lifestyle, specifically through the lens of a bohemian upbringing in an underground theater. This approach offers a nuanced look at identity shaped by art rather than institutional conformity. However, the documentary lacks specific details regarding racial and ethnic diversity, and there is no evidence of disability representation. The exploration of LGBTQ+ themes remains somewhat ambiguous, focusing more on interpersonal bonds than explicit identity markers.
