Smile Pinki is a powerful documentary that excels in portraying actively leading representation for its central subjects. By focusing on Pinki's journey from isolation to professional ambition, the film successfully avoids the common pitfalls of portraying disability as a source of mere pity. The film's strength lies in its authentic cultural setting and its ability to subvert gendered expectations in a resource-scarce environment. It presents a non-Western perspective that drives the narrative, ensuring the local population remains the primary agent of change. However, the film lacks diversity in terms of LGBTQ+ representation and does not engage with broader systemic or postmodernist critiques. While it addresses systemic neglect, the scope remains focused on individual humanitarian intervention.

Official Synopsis
Pinki is a five-year-old girl from a village in the Mirzapur District, India, born into a desperately poor family, and with a cleft lip. Pinki never realized that this condition required just one simple operation until she met Pankaj, a social worker traveling from village to village gathering patients to go to hospital in Varanasi that provides free surgery to thousands each year. This real-world fairy tale follows its protagonist journey to a dream smile from isolation and shame.
