Playing Men offers a broad Mediterranean perspective by moving through multiple countries and cultures. This geographic scope provides a diverse tapestry of human interaction that avoids a singular Western viewpoint. However, the film remains heavily focused on the male experience. While it challenges traditional masculinity through absurdity and vulnerability, it lacks explicit representation of multi-layered identities like LGBTQ+ or disability. Ultimately, the film succeeds as a study of social cohesion and cultural fluidity, even if it does not explicitly center underrepresented groups.
Category Breakdown
The film explores male camaraderie and social bonding through play. Though it doesn't feature explicit LGBTQ+ character arcs, the focus on male intimacy suggests a departure from strictly patriarchal depictions.
The narrative centers on the male experience but deconstructs the stoic male archetype. By emphasizing play and vulnerability, the film disrupts conventional expectations of masculine dominance.
The film offers significant ethnic breadth by traversing Croatia, Italy, Slovenia, and Turkey. This multi-national approach provides a non-Western lens through the inclusion of Turkish perspectives.
The documentary uses an essayistic format to prioritize personal experience over rigid structures. Its movement across borders suggests a fluidity of culture that challenges monolithic national identities.
There is no discernible evidence regarding the portrayal of physical or neurodivergent disabilities in this work.

Official Synopsis
A documentary essay about the relationships among Mediterranean men and their games. The film takes the form of a travelogue across Croatia, Italy, Slovenia and Turkey, and examines men, young and old, who come together like their ancestors did – to play games. During filming, however, the director suddenly faces a serious creative crisis and turns the camera on himself, turning the film into a playful homage to absurdity.
