Rome Rather Than You excels at centering the Algerian experience through a lens of ability to act rather than victimhood. By focusing on the internal lives of Zina and Kamel, the film avoids the reductive clichés often found in post-colonial cinema. The work delves deeply into cultural nuances, treating Algiers and the desert as vital, lived-in spaces. It moves beyond macro-politics to explore the micro-politics of individual identity and the struggle against societal expectations. While the film lacks explicit representation of LGBTQ+ identities or physical disabilities, its thematic focus on identity and altered states of consciousness provides a nuanced, if indirect, exploration of the human condition.
