Breathless is a visceral study of systemic failure and the cyclical nature of trauma. It succeeds by deconstructing traditional social hierarchies and refuses to romanticize the domestic sphere. The film transforms a grim look at violence into a complex interrogation of power dynamics. While the film excels in critiquing gendered authority and cultural institutions, it lacks representation for LGBTQ+ identities. The ethnic homogeneity of the cast limits its racial diversity score, though it provides a necessary non-Western perspective.
