During World War II, millions of Jews from all over Europe are deported and killed in German concentration camps. When the German troops invade Norway, the Norwegian Jews feel safe and protected. But anti-Semitism knows no borders and as the war escalates in Europe, the situation changes drastically. Suddenly, their radios are taken away; their passports are stamped with a big J and one day, all the men men over the age of 15 are arrested and taken to prisons camps. Many of the women left behind are too frightened to escape and are desperately waiting for their husbands and sons to come back home. On November 26, 1942, hundreds of Jews are picked up by the police in the middle of the night and are transported to the dock in Oslo. Unknowing and frightened men, women, children, sick and old are forced on board the awaiting German cargo ship "SS DONAU". The ship leaves with 532 Norwegian Jews onboard; 302 men, 188 women and 42 children. The end station is Auschwitz.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film focuses strictly on the ethnic and religious persecution of the Jewish community. There is no evidence of LGBTQ+ characters or narratives addressing non-heteronormative identities.
Gender Representation
The narrative highlights the specific vulnerabilities of women left behind during mass arrests. Depicting women navigating fear and domestic instability provides a nuanced look at gendered wartime trauma.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The film centers on the Jewish experience within a historically homogeneous Norwegian context. It challenges the archetype of the protected Western citizen by focusing on targeted minority persecution.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The story critiques state institutions and their failure to protect citizens. It presents a narrative of systemic victimhood that deconstructs the reliability of established political orders.
Disability Representation
The inclusion of sick and old individuals among those deported highlights the population's vulnerability. However, it is unclear if these characters possess narrative agency or serve as tragic markers.

AI Analysis
Betrayed is a somber historical drama that prioritizes the representation of a marginalized ethnic group. It avoids a sanitized version of history, instead highlighting the systemic mechanisms of oppression used against the Jewish community in Norway. The film's strength lies in its exploration of how state mechanisms and local complicity facilitate the oppression of minorities. By documenting the transition from social protection to systemic persecution, it effectively challenges notions of Western institutional stability. While the film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ or neurodivergent representation, it achieves meaningful depth through its focus on the intersection of ethnicity, religion, and state-sponsored violence.
