Expresul de Buftea serves as a cinematic retrospective, showcasing fifty years of Romanian comedy through a montage of historical clips. Its main objective is the preservation of national cultural heritage rather than introducing contemporary multi-layered narratives. The film reflects the demographic and social frameworks of the 20th-century Romanian film industry. While it offers a valuable archive of legendary performers, it remains anchored in traditional hierarchies and homogeneous casting practices of its time. Overall, the film presents a celebratory, institutional perspective on comedy and music hall traditions, prioritizing historical continuity and national identity over the disruption of social or gender norms.
Category Breakdown
The film does not include any explicitly LGBTQ+ characters or non-straight relationships. Instead, it focuses on traditional comedic and musical styles popular in the 1927–1977 period.
Famous female actors play significant roles in the film, providing visibility within the cinematic canon. However, women tend to fill roles defined by mid-20th-century comedic clichés rather than challenging traditional gender roles.
The cast and selected segments are predominantly made up of individuals from the same ethnic background. This reflects the ethnic makeup of the Romanian film industry during the 20th century rather than a diverse narrative.
The film strongly emphasizes the preservation of national cultural traditions. It highlights traditional artistic institutions and the 'comedy way' as essential components of the social fabric.
There is no clear indication of whether characters with disabilities are given meaningful roles. The montage format makes it hard to assess specific representations of disability.

Official Synopsis
Film montage, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Romanian comedy, using fragments from Romanian films from 1927-1977. The connecting sequences - the conversations of cinephile travelers on their way to the film studios in Buftea - account for about 40% of the total length of the film. We are grateful to the filmmakers for the reunions with great actors who have passed away or great living actors. We are very grateful to them for their kind and benevolent effort to entertain us in every way and in every way; the comedy way, the musical way, the music-hall way, all ways, because, if you look closely, an excellent comic moment comes from a detective movie.
