Judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino would eventually fall at the hands of Italy’s Cosa Nostra in 1992. However, before that, in 1985, they were preparing for the ‘Mafia Maxi Trial’ when a tip-off of a planned attack against their families sees them taken to an island in Sardinia to wait out the threat. This situation, somewhere between a forced vacation and witness protection, sees the men delve further into their work, the retreat allowing them to hone their case. Fate, however, is not to be escaped, and all too soon danger returns.

AI Analysis
Era d'estate is a historical drama deeply rooted in the specific socio-political realities of 1980s Italy. The film prioritizes the weight of historical duty and the looming threat of systemic violence over contemporary identity-based storytelling. The narrative architecture is built around the lives of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. Consequently, the representation aligns with the historical homogeneity of the period and the specific cultural context of the anti-Mafia struggle. While the film offers a nuanced look at the struggle for institutional justice, it lacks intentional intersectional subversion. It functions as a work of traditional historical realism rather than a vehicle for diverse identity representation.
