Holes succeeds by challenging traditional clichés, especially through the strong representation of characters of color like Zero. The film's strength lies in its critique of institutional corruption and its ability to integrate historical injustice into a modern context. However, the film is limited by its male-dominated setting and the absence of LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. While Kate Barlow offers a powerful female presence, the lack of diverse gendered interactions keeps the overall score moderate. Ultimately, the film provides a nuanced look at systemic failures, though it falls short in representing disability and non-straight-centered identities.
