The Water Babies is a period-accurate fantasy that prioritizes classical storytelling and historical uniformity. It reinforces the social and demographic norms of the Victorian era without challenging them. The film lacks intentionality in representing multiple aspects of diversity. It focuses on a singular male protagonist's journey, leaving little room for diverse perspectives on gender, race, or identity. Ultimately, the production adheres to traditional narrative structures, favoring a standard moral arc over contemporary explorations of cultural or social diversity.
