Blue River is a conventional mid-90s domestic drama that emphasizes themes of familial abandonment and religious friction over social subversion. The narrative structure relies on traditional clichés, focusing on the volatility of a nuclear family under pressure. The film provides a critique of religious authority through the character of Henry Howland, yet it fails to offer multi-layered depth. The lack of diverse casting and the reliance on male-driven conflict limit its progressive impact. Ultimately, the film serves as a localized character study rather than a challenge to systemic power dynamics, reinforcing standard dramatic frameworks of its era.
