Synopsis

A boy, a girl. They live in the same building. They share a passion for music. But when they meet in the elevator, Théo doesn’t see that Élise is blind. It’s hate at first sight. Love takes its time. Will that early misunderstanding bring them together or drive them apart?

Where to Watch

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.8/10

Limited

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film centers on a traditional adolescent romance between a boy and a girl. It does not feature queer narrative arcs or non-cisnormative identities.

Gender Representation

Fair

The story provides a nuanced look at maternal strength through a central mother figure. It explores emotional vulnerability in both genders without strictly subverting traditional hierarchies.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

Casting is predominantly white, reflecting the demographic of a rural French coastal village. The film maintains a homogeneous social environment consistent with its realist aesthetic.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The narrative emphasizes family bonds and community cohesion. It focuses on the sanctity of the family unit and healing from loss rather than systemic critique.

Disability Representation

Good

The character Élise is blind, and her impairment is integrated naturally into the story. The film avoids tropes by focusing on her agency and sensory connection to music.

Strengths

  • Provides a dignified and naturalistic portrayal of blindness through Élise's agency.
  • Offers a nuanced depiction of maternal strength and the complexities of single parenthood.
  • Explores emotional vulnerability in both male and female characters within a realist framework.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-cisnormative gender arcs.
  • Maintains a homogeneous racial demographic that lacks ethnic diversity.
  • Adheres to traditional heteronormative romantic and social structures.

AI Analysis

The film is a character-driven realist drama that prioritizes emotional intimacy and the human condition. It succeeds in providing a dignified portrayal of disability, treating Élise's blindness as a natural part of her identity rather than a mere plot device. However, the film adheres to traditional heteronormative and demographic structures. The lack of intersectional diversity and the focus on a homogeneous social environment result in a lower score for systemic representation. Ultimately, while it lacks progressive social subversion, it offers a meaningful and respectful look at sensory disability and familial resilience.
