Adolphe is a classic psychological drama centered on the breakdown of a single character's psyche. It successfully challenges traditional masculine archetypes by presenting a male protagonist who is emotionally fragile and psychologically unstable, rather than dominant. However, the film lacks diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, and gender identity. Set in a homogeneous 19th-century French environment, it avoids engaging with non-white perspectives or non-assuming gender matches what was assigned at birth identities. The narrative focuses on individual psychological turmoil rather than broader social issues. Overall, while the film provides a nuanced portrayal of gendered vulnerability, it remains confined within the rigid structures of its historical context.
