Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

2.6/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film contains no discernible LGBTQ+ characters or non-cisnormative identities. Romantic motivations are strictly heteronormative, and the narrative avoids any engagement with queer themes.

Gender Representation

Limited

Female characters function primarily as narrative catalysts rather than autonomous agents. The protagonist's arc is driven by the death of his fiancée, reinforcing a traditional masculine archetype.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

Casting is predominantly white, reflecting a homogeneous view of Western intelligence. Non-white characters lack depth, often appearing only as antagonists or peripheral figures within a Western-centric framework.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The story aligns with Western institutional values, legitimizing state-sanctioned vigilantism. It frames espionage as a professional necessity rather than offering a critique of Western hegemony or morality.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no meaningful portrayal of physical or neurodivergent disabilities. Characters are defined by the peak physical capabilities required for black-ops missions, ignoring diverse lived experiences.

Strengths

  • The film provides a focused character study of the psychological costs of clandestine warfare through its mentor-protégé framework.

Areas for Improvement

  • The narrative relies on female characters as mere catalysts for male agency rather than providing them with autonomy.
  • Casting lacks racial depth, often relegating non-white characters to antagonist roles within a Western-centric lens.
  • The film fails to represent physical or neurodivergent disabilities, focusing exclusively on peak physical combat capability.
  • There is a complete absence of LGBTQ+ representation or non-cisnormative identities throughout the story.

AI Analysis

American Assassin operates within a conventional geopolitical thriller framework that prioritizes traditional social hierarchies. The narrative focuses on a mentor-protégé relationship and individualistic vengeance, which limits the scope for diverse perspectives. The film reinforces established genre tropes, particularly regarding gender and race. By centering the story on a white, male operative and using female characters as mere plot devices, the film maintains a narrow, Western-centric worldview. Ultimately, the production lacks intentionality regarding intersectional representation. It adheres to a standard masculine archetype and a homogeneous view of intelligence agencies, offering little engagement with identities outside the dominant norm.
