AI Analysis
Shyam Benegal utilizes social realism to deconstruct local power structures and systemic inequities. The film's strength lies in its commitment to representing the complexities of the post-colonial social hierarchy rather than relying on mainstream cinematic tropes. While the film lacks overt subversions of gender and sexuality, it excels in its authentic portrayal of regional and caste-based identities. By centering a driver and a rural community, it provides a non-tokenized look at the subcontinent's social strata. The narrative functions as a sophisticated critique of how established social orders impact the individual, prioritizing nuanced social commentary over radical identity politics.
