Final Cut is a conventional 1990s horror piece that relies heavily on established genre clichés. The narrative focuses on a predatory power dynamic between two men, offering little in the way of social commentary or diverse perspectives. The film fails to engage with the cultural complexity of its New Orleans setting or provide meaningful representation for underrepresented groups. Instead, it prioritizes individual pathology and shock value, using physical descriptors like obesity to signal deviance. Ultimately, the film lacks the intentionality required to challenge social hierarchies, functioning instead as a standard genre exercise centered on a singular, predatory conflict.
Category Breakdown
The film lacks LGBTQ+ characters or narratives that address the assumption that everyone is straight or cisgender. It follows a traditional horror structure focused on a predatory antagonist without incorporating queer themes.
The story centers on a male protagonist and a male antagonist. There is no evidence of women playing a significant role in driving the story or disrupting traditional gender roles.
Despite being set in New Orleans, the film does not appear to explore racial diversity. It defaults to a standard genre framework without considering multiple aspects of identity.
The narrative prioritizes shock value and individual pathology over cultural critique. It frames extreme behavior through horror clichés rather than systemic issues.
The antagonist's obesity is used as shorthand for villainy. There is no evidence of characters with disabilities having real depth beyond stereotypical portrayals.
