Sylvie Verheyde’s film is a nuanced coming-of-age story that excels in subverting gender hierarchies. By prioritizing female subjectivity and friendship, it moves away from traditional patriarchal structures. However, the film remains limited by a lack of racial and LGBTQ+ diversity. The homogeneous European setting and absence of explicit LGBTQ+ identities prevent a higher overall score. Ultimately, the work is a progressive study of individual experience that succeeds in its refusal to adhere to masculine-centric storytelling, even if it lacks broader multi-layered breadth.
Category Breakdown
The film focuses on the emotional and platonic bonds between female protagonists. It avoids a traditional straight-centered gaze but does not include explicit LGBTQ+ identities or non-straight characters.
Women play a central role in driving the story. The female protagonists take charge of their lives, challenging the idea that women are secondary to men.
The setting is a homogeneous European urban landscape. The cast is mostly white, and the story does not explore multi-layered racial dynamics or diverse ethnic backgrounds.
The film challenges the idealized nuclear family by showing parents who are unreliable and flawed. It moves away from a single traditional moral code towards a more relative moral stance.
There is no prominent depiction of physical or neurodivergent disabilities. The characters' struggles are mainly emotional and developmental, not centered on visible disabilities or neurodivergence.

Sophie hasn’t seen her father for at least ten years. She’s gotten used to it and has built a life of her own. One morning, she learns that he is wanted for murder and that she has a half-sister. Her name is Virginie, and her motto is: “I don’t give a damn.” Almost against their will, they set out in search of their father. Between Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam, they meet Simon.
