Alagwa is a work of social realism that prioritizes a localized Filipino experience over Western-centric storytelling norms. By focusing on the perilous backstreets of the Philippines, the film centers on systemic vulnerabilities and the fragility of the family unit. The narrative's strength lies in its cultural authenticity and its refusal to rely on escapist clichés. It explores the emotional stakes of a father searching for his missing son within a landscape of institutional failure. However, the film's focus remains narrow, centering primarily on paternal ability to act. This concentration of narrative drive may limit the breadth of gender and identity representation within the story.
