Torn straight from the headlines, Michael Winterbottom's compelling and prescient 'In This World' follows young Afghan Jamal and his older cousin Enayat as they embark on a hazardous overland trip from their refugee camp at Peshawar, north-west Pakistan. Entering Turkey on foot through a snowy, Kurdish-controlled pass, the pair again take their lives into their hands and face suffocation when they are locked in a freight container on a ship bound for Italy. From there they plan to travel on to Paris, the Sangatte refuge centre and ultimately asylum in London.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
Queer identities are woven into the urban landscape as part of a broader human experience. While these vignettes disrupt social expectations, they lack a dedicated, deep character arc for queer agency.
Gender Representation
The film subverts traditional masculine leadership by focusing on the shared precariousness of all characters. Gender is often viewed through the lens of survival and transient connections.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The narrative centers Afghan refugees, placing characters of color in positions of profound agency. This focus actively challenges Anglo-centric perspectives by highlighting non-white resilience.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The story critiques systemic borders and Western institutional frameworks through the refugee experience. It prioritizes the lived truths of the displaced over a Western-centric moral framework.
Disability Representation
The film emphasizes the physical toll of migration rather than specific neurodivergence or permanent disability. Vulnerability is presented as a systemic struggle against harsh environments.

AI Analysis
In This World is a powerful exercise in social realism that centers the displacement and resilience of non-Western protagonists. By following Jamal and Enayat's hazardous journey from Pakistan to Europe, the film avoids treating characters of color as mere background figures, instead granting them significant agency. The film's fragmented structure mirrors the instability of the refugee experience, successfully challenging traditional hero narratives. It excels at critiquing geopolitical boundaries and the systemic barriers faced by those navigating globalized borders. However, the film's focus on the physical strain of migration means that specific depictions of disability or neurodivergence remain secondary. While gender and queer identities are present, they often serve the broader theme of survival rather than receiving deep, individual character development.
