Gender Representation

Fair

Anjali possesses emotional agency, yet her character arc remains defined by her relationships with two men. The narrative reinforces traditional gendered archetypes within a domestic framework.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Excellent

The cast is predominantly South Asian, reflecting its cultural origins without Western-centric casting. It presents a cohesive and culturally specific identity.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

Class friction exists between Dev and Ram, but it is framed as romantic tragedy rather than systemic critique. The story prioritizes traditional values and familial stability.

Strengths

  • Strong, culturally specific South Asian representation that avoids whitewashing.
  • Provides a cohesive and authentic cultural identity through its casting.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks representation for LGBTQ+ identities or non-cisnormative gender expressions.
  • Reinforces traditional gender hierarchies and patriarchal romantic tropes.
  • Does not address disability or provide systemic critiques of class and social structures.

AI Analysis

Dhadkan is a classic romantic melodrama that prioritizes emotional archetypes over intersectional complexity. It succeeds in centering a culturally specific South Asian narrative, providing a cohesive identity that avoids Western-centric casting tropes. However, the film operates within a conventional social framework. It reinforces traditional gender hierarchies and relies on a heteronormative structure that lacks LGBTQ+ representation or disability visibility. Ultimately, the film focuses on individual emotional integrity and romantic sacrifice rather than deconstructing systemic class or patriarchal structures.
